Joke

I just had to pass along a joke I heard today. Enjoy!

"An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first one orders a beer. The second orders half a beer. The third, a quarter of a beer. The bartender says "You're all idiots", and pours two beers."

Nontrivial infinite series are always worth a good laugh.

A Couple of Blogs

Life is very busy right now. We are still getting used to having a new baby in the house and that process seems to take up the majority of everyone's time. In the last few minutes at the end of the day, I found the time to discover a couple of great blogs and I wanted to share them with you all.

The first blog is called "The Range Life" and it chronicles the kayaking/exploration adventures of 3 guys from the Seattle area. They are really in to what they do, they know how to take great pictures, and they know how re-tell the adventures. The Seattle Times had an article about these guys today, and thus I discovered them. Crazy Phil was the first person I emailed when I discovered the blog, since "crazy" is right up his alley.

The second blog is John Lott's personal blog. John Lott is a senior research scientist with the University of Maryland. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from UCLA and has contributed much to science and society. His is primarily known for his books and research looking into gun control, but he has also done excellent research in the area of media bias, abortion, and women's suffrage.

Enjoy! I'm off to bed to try a get a little sleep. Wish me luck!

P.S. The picture has nothing to do with the post. This is a shot of a fruit tray I made up for a Sunday morning brunch 2 years ago.

Danish Puff Pastry

As much as I love to eat, cook, smell, and taste food, you would never be able to tell from my blog. I seldom make the time to write about the food I cook or enjoy, but it is not from a lack of desire. This current election has kept me busy researching a number of issues and keeping people from spreading partial truths, but it has not kept me out of the kitchen.

Yesterday I made one of my all time favorite desserts: Danish Puff Pastry. I have been making this dessert since I was ~10 years old, and with a cup of coffee it always satisfies (even if you don't include the coffee). The recipe is from (of all places) the classic, red covered, Betty Crocker cookbook.

There is something so simple and yet profound about a butter crust and choux pastry drizzled with icing sugar frosting and topped off with blanched toasted almonds.
